Regular Committee/Board Meeting of the

Board of Commissioners


July 10, 2013



President Pratl called the meeting to order at 8:00pm.



The following commissioners were present:  Commissioners Crout, Lind absent with notice, Egan absent with notice, Conrad and Pratl.   Also present: Director King, Recreation Superintendent Malito and Maintenance Supervisor Biskey.



Everyone participated in the Pledge of Allegiance. 



President Pratl gave the floor to a resident who made the Board aware of some issues he has regarding the condition of Freedom Park.  He also informed the Board of an incident he witnessed regarding an act of vandalism on the port-o-john in the park further stating that he called the police.   The Board thanked him for his input and diligence in helping to keep an eye on the parks. 



Chair Report

Commissioner Crout asked Recreation Superintendent Malito if there will be classes offered after the Tiny Tots class.  He said there will be.


Superintendent’s Report

Recreation Superintendent Malito reported on the Western Open which was a great tournament with 14 participants. 


Recreation Superintendent Malito also reported on the Day Camp program, the upcoming trip to Brookfield Zoo, Tiny Tots classes which have been extended from two to three hours; and the upcoming 45th anniversary celebration.


Work has begun on the 2013 Fall Brochure.


Commissioner Pratl asked for a report on the plans for Polar Express.  The dates requested for this event are December 13th & 20th.  Mr. & Mrs. Claus will also be there.


Commissioner Pratl commented that they will be discussing the holiday house decorating contests at the August Committee Meeting, primary topic being judging options.  Some discussion ensued.


Whiffle Ball league did not have enough teams sign up. 






Chair Report

Commissioner Conrad commented that the maintenance department is short-handed but staff has been doing a good job keeping up with everything.  Director King also commended the maintenance staff Maintenance Supervisor Biskey for a job well done.  Commissioner Conrad also commented that the purchase of new benches and receptacles at the Lombard meditation area will be postponed.


Supervisor’s Report

Maintenance Supervisor Biskey reported that the CPU boards were repaired and installed at Ball Fore.  All pumps and fountains are working well at this facility.


New filters were installed at Lily Pad.  An issue arose regarding a sensor which has been taken care of.


New sod will be added to Freedom Park to spruce it up before the 45th anniversary celebration.  Signs advertising the 45th anniversary event were put up at Menard, Freedom and Ball Fore.


New swing chain was ordered for swings at Oak.


Commissioner Conrad asked if new banquet table had been ordered.  Maintenance Supervisor Biskey reported that they had not.  In regard to the CPU boards, Commissioner Conrad asked if it was feasible to have an extra one on hand in case one goes down.  Maintenance Supervisor Biskey commented that it would be cost prohibitive considering the low expectation for problems.


Commissioner Crout asked if any progress was made on asking for additional concrete stops behind Ball Fore.  Commissioner Conrad responded that due to the volume of special projects and events, this will be addressed at a later date.


In regard to Frontier, Commissioner Pratl asked that the outside bench be fixed and the garbage can removed.


Director’s Report

Director King reported that the audit went well.  Staff did a good job getting ready for this.  He expects a good report. 


The Board was given a commercial property tax appeal for their review.  Director King stated that a recommendation and resolution to intervene will be prepared by Attorney Stillman for the next meeting.


Director King reported on the success of the Western Open tournament.


Director King reported on the schedule of events and set-up details for the 45th anniversary celebration.  Everything is set and ready.  Staff did a great job putting this together.


Commissioner Pratl informed the Board that he will be representing the Park District by sitting on the Village’s 100th Anniversary Committee.    


Commissioner Pratl asked Commissioner Conrad to report on the Ridge Fest plans.  The Board was given information on security for this event which is being reduced in man hours and personnel this year despite the increase in expected attendees and alcohol sales.


The Board was shown a booklet prepared by the Day Camp kids, as an expression of their pride in the Chicago Blackhawks for winning the Stanley Cup Championship, which will be sent to the Chicago Blackhawks with a congratulatory letter requesting a visit to the Chicago Ridge Park District.


Recreation Superintendent Malito and Maintenance Supervisor Biskey then exited the meeting.

Commissioner Lind was not at the meeting.  No report was given.

Commissioner Egan was not at the meeting.  No report was given.



There was no old business to discuss.



There was no new business to discuss.



There was no need to enter into Executive Session.



President Pratl called for a motion to adjourn at 8:41pm.  Motion was made by Commissioner Crout and seconded by Commissioner Conrad.  All in favor, aye.  Motion carried.
